Hope is a the thing with feathers by Emily Dickinson

Hope is the thing with feathers

That perches in the soul,

And sings the tune without the words,

And never stops at all.

And sweetest in the gale is heard;

And sore must be the storm

That could abash the little bird

That kept so many warm.

I’ve heard it in the chilliest land

And on the strangest sea;

Yet, never, in extremity,

It asked a crumb of me.

Shrimp & Asparagus Pasta in a Lemon Caper Butter Sauce

1

Pinch of Everything

I loosely followed three different recipes to make this dish and was very happy with how it turned out.

The first recipe was my inspiration: Shrimp Scampi Pasta with Asparagus (VIDEO Recipe)

Ingredients

½ lb spaghetti
1 lb (or 1 bundle) asparagus, rinsed
3 Tbsp butter, divided
3 Tbsp olive oil, divided
4 cloves garlic, minced (about 1½ Tbsp)
1 lb large shrimp, peeled and deveined (16-20 or 21-25 count)
Sea Salt and Pepper
¼ cup fresh lemon juice (from 1 large or 2 small lemons)
⅓ cup fresh parsley, finely chopped
1 Tbsp grated lemon zest
Grated Parmesan to serve

Instructions

Bring a large pot of water to a boil, add 1 Tbsp salt and 1 Tbsp olive oil and cook pasta according to package instructions until aldente, or desired doneness (meanwhile, continue with recipe). Drain pasta, return to pot and cover to keep warm.

Trim asparagus to remove…

The unhealthy stigma about healthy eating

1

Berries and Stitches

Everybody who likes to eat healthily, or has specific dietary requirements knows the situation: you’re out with friends, they decide to get a takeaway, and you, with your ‘fussy’ eating, are left wondering what you’re going to do for your meal. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with having the occasional takeaway, but if you’re anything like me, a processed, stodgy meal does not appeal (I’m more into chocolate than burgers).

Unfortunately, there’s a sort of stigma around eating healthily, that you wouldn’t expect to find today, but most people have probably experienced it. Eating healthily is different to being on a diet; it’s a lifestyle, and what I think most people misunderstand is that most of the time, you would rather have that delicious salad from your favourite coffee shop, than fried chicken or a burger from your local takeaway. Personally, I have no specific dietary requirements, I’m not vegan…

Where My Freelensing Journey Began

THE DETACHED LENS

Freelensing was first introduced to me over two years ago on a photography forum I belong to. Someone shared her experience of experimenting with detaching her lens to take pictures, and I marveled at what she came up with. The works were dreamy, flawed, blurry, photographic prose. I immediately grabbed my Nikon to try it out.

But…it didn’t work. I couldn’t see through the viewfinder, and only saw a black screen when I pressed the shutter button. What was going on?

Coming together on the forum, we soon discovered the problem: the aperture on my Nikkor lens was scrunching closed whenever I removed it from the camera. The only solution was to tape it open, or rig it with a piece of folded paper.

Annoyed, I gave it up for a while.

A few months (?) later, everything changed. I discovered the work of Irene Suchocki, and my interest…

Unicorn Frappuccino – Will you try it?

7

The Foods Around Me

Probably the worst tasting Starbucks drink ever to be created. Literally tastes like a unicorn went to chipotle and shit in a cup.

Unicorn Frappucino:

An instant star of social media platforms, it’s literally on all of them check. Starbucks released this limited time drink in all stores this week. Being completely different than all other drink releases the description on the drink is absolutely terrible.

The Starbucks description reads:

“The flavor-changing, color-changing, totally-not-made-up Unicorn Frappuccino. Magical flavors start off sweet and fruity transforming to pleasantly sour. Swirl it to reveal a color-changing spectacle of purple and pink. It’s finished with whipped cream sprinkled pink and blue fairy powders.”

How it should be described:

This drink misses its mark on all levels. The sweetness completely overpowers the flavors of the drink. Its sourness is a blue raspberry that takes away from the mango syrup. The consistency doesn’t help the uniqueness in flavor. It has a…

Q: Do you always need to feel inspired to create?

The Artist Diaries

I’ve been feeling very unmotivated recently when it comes to painting.

To be completely honest, I just feel like I can’t be bothered. I feel lethargic and ‘heavy’ when I think about it, like it’s too much effort for so little in return (meaning either an unfinished painting or worse — a painting I dislike).

Lying in bed last night I remembered several conversations I’ve had over the past couple of years about the nature of motivation and inspiration, and how our feelings aren’t actually the most reliable gauge in terms of whether or not we should do something.

Feeling lethargic and unmotivated doesn’t have to stop me from being creative. In fact, no feeling has the power to prevent me from doing anything without my complicity.

I can complain of feeling horribly uninspired and still put paint on a canvas. I can feel moody and bored and still doodle on a…

Attitude is Everything – Scientific Proof Thoughts & Intentions Can Alter The Physical World Around Us

3

Be Like Water

http://themindunleashed.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/i-hate-you-1050x787.jpg

Dr. Masaru Emoto, a researcher and alternative healer from Japan has given the world a good deal of evidence of the magic of positive thinking. He became famous when his water molecule experiments featured in the 2004 film, What The Bleep Do We Know? His experiments demonstrate that human thoughts and intentions can alter physical reality, such as the molecular structure of water. Given that humans are comprised of at least 60% water, his discovery has far reaching implications… can anyone really afford to have negative thoughts or intentions?

The rice experiment is another famous Emoto demonstration of the power of negative thinking (and conversely, the power of positive thinking.) Dr Emoto placed portions of cooked rice into two containers. On one container he wrote “thank you” and on the other “you fool”. He then instructed school children to say the labels on the jars out loud…

Aaron Hernandez And His Sad End

1

Tattle Tales

I’m not a football fan. I mean, as a New Englander it’s mandatory I root for the Patriots when they’re in the Super Bowl, and believe it or not I do understand football. Aaron Hernandez is a sad, cautionary tale perhaps, but definitely a study in what not to do when you make it out of the hood.

He was from Bristol, CT, which is about 20 miles outside of Hartford and not a “hood” by any means but not immune to gang activity. Hernandez was allegedly a member of the Bloods, and didn’t leave his connections behind when he made it to the NFL. Allegedly. He showed up at his latest court case just days ago with a brand new neck tattoo symbolizing the Bloods. Allegedly.

Doing a life bid with no parole for shooting and killing his friend, and just beating a double murder rap, Hernandez hung himself…

Beauty, skin deep

2

hello coloured life

‘Beauty is only skin deep’ they say. Then why is it that every emphasis is placed upon the appearance of a woman? The definition of that proverb is that a pleasing appearance is not a guide to character. When I ‘discover’ on Instagram all I literally see are females prancing about in their underwear, butts and boobs I like to call them.

The female essence had been reduced to butts and boobs…doesn’t that just make us proud? Look at yourself and say ‘I am a butt’ or ‘I am a boob’. Thats just makes me cringe to be honest. When we sit back and think about what we believe to be a attractive, we see that it’s all merely physical.

That rant over there brings me to this week’s blog post. As I am shedding the kgs and growing in my weight loss journey, I am discovering that I have unrealistic ideas of what…
