Brain Hacks to instantly improve your Memory!!!

Having a sharp memory is important for a lot of reasons. Not only should it improve your professional life, but going to dinner parties and remembering everyone’s name is downright impressive. If you think you have been cursed with a terrible memory, I have good news for you: that’s not true. Anyone can improve their memory by following this simple advice. Learning how to remember things is vital. Many intelligent people have a hard time remembering things simply because they’re not attempting to recover the information (or store it) properly. Just follow these tips, you’ll see an improvement.

1.)   Use the “snooze button:” To remember random information like an address or phone number, instead of repeating it to yourself, just rehearse it every 15 seconds or so for a few minutes. Don’t wait longer than that or else the memory will decay.

2.)  The peg system: This may seem like a bizarre method to recall information, but he human body peg system works. What you do is imagine parts of the human body itself and use them as “pegs” to store information. You visualize an image of what you are trying to remember and associate it with a corresponding body part.

3.)   Just sincerely FOCUS: Many people listen to music or have the television on while they study, but this actually significantly impairs the ability to memorize information. You can’t actually multi-task, you just jump in between tasks. So, to memorize information, just focus and limit other stimuli.

4.)   Linking: If you link items together in a list (even if they are unrelated), it’s easier to remember them. A common way to link items together on a list is with a short story, where you incorporate every item.

5.)   The keyword method: This is a useful trick when you need to memorize vocabulary when learning a foreign language. To use it, take a sound that you recognize from the new word, visualize that sound and then relate it to the new word you are learning.

6.)    The method of Loci: This is also known as the Journey Method and the Roman Room Method. This old memory technique uses a “memory palace” or house. You mentally walk through an area where you have stored information. By walking through different rooms or areas, you can remember the information you stored in those rooms.

7.)   Use the chunking method: According to research, you can hold about five to nine (seven on average) items in your working memory at one time. However, we can remember things like a phone number (10 digits-long) by chunking the information into groups. Therefore, that 10 digit phone number is only really three pieces of information.

8.)   Setting the information: There is a phenomenon called context-dependent memory, where you can give yourself clues for remembering things based on the sensory input you are experiencing at the time of the memory. Researchers found that when test participants learned something underwater, they could recall the information better when underwater again.

9.)   Using music to enhance memory: You shouldn’t distract yourself with music if you’re trying to remember something. Instead, putting long strings of text TO music (like lyrics) is an effective way to remember something. Think of all of the songs you learned in grade school to remember facts; that’s this mnemonic at work.

10.)   Smell enhances memory: Smell is one of the most powerful memory recall devices possible. This sense memory is exceptionally strong because the nose is able to go directly to your memory center. If you were studying for a test and wearing a certain perfume, if you wore the same perfume during the test you may perform better.

One of the most baffling and maddening questions to either ask or be asked when it comes to panic and anxiety disorder is the question of “Why?” What causes a panic attack? Where does it come from? How come you have it? How to deal with a panic attack?

It’s hard for those who deal with anxiety attacks and it’s hard for those who go through them and it’s hard for those who lived with someone in their life who’s going through it.

It’s difficult and it is especially maddening when you realize that what people believe is the cause really turns out to be symptoms of something and not the cause.

I will give you an example what causes a panic attack. Many people will have a panic attack that they will say their first panic attack came from out of the blue. I don’t know where, just they may be in the grocery store or they may have been in a shopping center or on a plane or a train or maybe they were stuck in traffic or alone or maybe there’s a storm that was coming and they just started feeling nervous and the next thing you know, they’re hyperventilating and they don’t know why.

A lot of times people will be in those situations and they will say, “Aha! That’s what caused my panic attack” Truth is that my friend is the opposite of what I believe you need to do when you’re trying to find out what caused it. 

What cause a anxiety attack? 
The real thing to do is now to backtrack and find out what was the sequence of events that kind of led you to where you were. I don’t suggest this is easy and there are a lot of causal relationships that you might not recognize.

But there are some big red flag events or lifestyle choices that you can make which can cause a anxiety attack:

  1. You have a robust emotional vocabulary

All people experience emotions, but it is a select few who can accurately identify them as they occur. Our research shows that only 36 per cent of people can do this, which is problematic because unlabeled emotions often go misunderstood, which leads to irrational choices and counterproductive actions.

People with high EQs master their emotions because they understand them, and they use an extensive vocabulary of feelings to do so. While many people might describe themselves as simply feeling “bad,” emotionally intelligent people can pinpoint whether they feel “irritable,” “frustrated,” “downtrodden,” or “anxious.” The more specific your word choice, the better insight you have into exactly how you are feeling, what caused it, and what you should do about it.

  1. You’re curious about people

It doesn’t matter if they’re introverted or extroverted, emotionally intelligent people are curious about everyone around them. This curiosity is the product of empathy, one of the most significant gateways to a high EQ. By keeping their mistakes at a safe distance, yet still handy enough to refer to, they are able to adapt and adjust for future success. It takes refined self-awareness to walk this tightrope between dwelling and remembering. Dwelling too long on your mistakes makes you anxious and gun shy, while forgetting about them completely makes you bound to repeat them. The key to balance lies in your ability to transform failures into nuggets of improvement. This creates the tendency to get right back up every time you fall down.

  1. You give and expect nothing in return

When someone gives you something spontaneously, without expecting anything in return, this leaves a powerful impression. For example, you might have an interesting conversation with someone about a book, and when you see them again a month later, you show up with the book in hand. Emotionally intelligent people build strong relationships because they are constantly thinking about others.

  1. You don’t hold grudges

The negative emotions that come with holding onto a grudge are actually a stress response. Just thinking about the event sends your body into fight-or-flight mode, a survival mechanism that forces you to stand up and fight or run for the hills when faced with a threat. When the threat is imminent, this reaction is essential to your survival, but when the threat is ancient history, holding onto that stress wreaks havoc on your body and can have devastating health consequences over time. In fact, researchers at Emory University have shown that holding onto stress contributes to high blood pressure and heart disease. Holding onto a grudge means you’re holding onto stress, and emotionally intelligent people know to avoid this at all costs. Letting go of a grudge not only makes you feel better now but can also improve your health.

I feel like a senior in college the night before he has to turn in his last thesis. Except this time I’m not turning in 50+ pages of random liberal crap like I used to spout for my Resolution of Conflicts minor… I wished I saved my senior theses, I bet they were horrendous. I wrote two different 50 page, one 30 page and one shared 50 page with a team of four, fuck working in teams (it was about saving the whales). 

April looks promising. There is a lot of good stuff that will be happening (I hope and I am sorta nervous for all of it). I haven’t seen this much work laying on my desktop in a while. It’s a bit of a clusterfuck, but I’m getting it done one by one. It will be a very busy month. I have a lot of ideas for larger articles and I plan to do major changes to Tijuana Adventure. 

March was difficult, but March is also almost over. I spent most of it being broke and stressed while working and looking for a job. It wasn’t until this last Tuesday that I finally got a decent paycheck. I paid a little debt that I had, enjoyed myself, and did some work. Unfortunately, the work I did was rejected and the other research I was doing prove to be more difficult than I first though (and I have more difficult research to do this week).

I tried working on Tuesday, but on my way to San Diego all I could think of was that I finally had some money. And once I deposited my check to the bank and had some cash, all I could think of is that I could finally eat out and enjoy myself. 

On Wednesday, I spent my morning doing some fruitless research and decided to go out. Found out that the awesome artist Teak (who happens to be my neighbor) painted me in his mural. His mural is about immigrants in Tijuana, Teak himself being one (and of course, myself)

Thursday I worked on more fruitless research, that I ended up deciding switching my focus to the events from Wednesday, the Dinner in The Sky shit. Also started collecting info and pictures for a food review of a vegan place.

Friday I sent what I had work on so far on the week, sadly, this was my aforementioned rejected article. That afternoon I got more vegan food and went to Plaza Fiesta to get an interview for a re-write (more of this in upcoming weeks). I got day drunk thanks to a Quadruple Belgian beer (and others) but got great material and pictures for more work.
Saturday the same, more work. I’m glad there wasn’t soccer matches on the Mexican league this weekend, otherwise I would have done nothing but watch soccer. I went to a different nerdy/awesome restaurant to again, collect pictures and information for yet more work! I think this is the post that I have typed the word “work” the most. Then I did more nerdy stuff by going to the Plaza Friki to play Street Fighter V with my friend Ohh Wow (I kicked his ass). Got more interview material and pictures at night for more and more work I’ll be doing this week… 

And guess what I did on Sunday?! I worked! I transcribed, wrote, edited, restructured and organized more WORK! Now I wished all this worked paid, but I guess that is where I’m barely getting at. Working and suffering to build a career (that hopefully is nothing like House of Cards). Tired from all the work, I napped on the early afternoon and woke up near midnight. Realizing it was Monday already and knowing that I have a lot of work to do on the week, I wrote the Monday blog post before dawn just to get it out of the way.

On my years chasing celebrities, I had a top three celebrities that people always asked for that I almost never saw. Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Johnny Depp. I never saw Depp, but I did catch Pitt and Clooney for a very brief moment each. Seriously, all I got were like 10 seconds. These people are busy. So I shouldn’t be complaining about how busy I am. I still have time to go to a nerdy plaza to play videogames…

I saw Pitt on February 5, 2011, that same day I also saw… Paris Hilton. And yes, if you are wondering, I did see Angelina Jolie (stories later).

Pitt arrived on Terminal 2, so I’m guessing he was coming from Air France. There were dozens of paparazzi waiting, but he snuck by some “not so secret” doors and only a few caught him (I had a great position). Anyway, here are the pics of the only time I saw Pitt.

And now that I am done with my blog… I can go to bed (it’s 2:57 now) so I can wake up and do more work. I’m kinda hungry, but I’m sure that eating at this hour is not a good idea. Napping for four hours during the afternoon is also not a good idea, but I guess this is the life of a freelance.
