Movie Review: The Mummy

So Universal has kicked off their Dark Universe. I think it’s pretty cool, although I did think it was weird to see “Dark Universe” on the screen when I’ve been waiting for the DC movie of the same name. Apparently Warner Bros. thinks it’s weird too, because the internet tells me they’re thinking about suing Universal for use of the name. But as evidenced by the new logo, Universal ain’t too worried about it. Another weird thing is that apparently this universe includes the Phantom of the Opera and the Hunchback of Notre Dame, neither of which are monsters to my knowledge. But anyway, on to the movie.

I had fun, guys. I spent too much time trying to figure out if I actually liked this movie, but after a certain point I was sure I liked it. But you know, my liking a movie shouldn’t be so contingent upon…

How to Lose Friends and Criticize Movies: A Wonder Woman Review

I Want To Watch Movies, But For Free

This is going to be a spoileriffic review.  Consider yourself warned.

I am not sure how to write this review. I’ll confess that right off the bat. I saw this movie last night, and I cannot understand the amount if love that it is getting. It is not a great movie. It is a movie that was mostly in focus and was a step in the right direction toward a great female superhero movie, but if this is the best we are gonna get, I will be deeply disappointed.

The difference between important and good

Lets establish something here. This movie is important. It is the first major superhero movie starring a female protagonist of the modern superhero era, and was also directed by a female director. I hope that it is a first step toward more female voices being considered for director spots on these kinds of movies. I…

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2! Whoo!

Merlin's Musings

That. Was. Fantastic!

I do not know if Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is “Marvel’s best yet,” as some are saying, but I certainly see how the argument can be made. 🙂

Most obviously, the first Guardians movie is regarded by many, including myself, to be one of, if not the, greatest Marvel works and comic book movies ever, and Vol. 2 is a step up. It doesn’t feel “better than the first” so much as it feels like the natural progression upwards that comes when telling a single good story. We’ve already met and gotten to know these characters, and now we are delving into their depths and seeing them progress and grow.

That is one fair criticism of Guardians: the characters, hero and villain alike, can feel just a little bit shallow as we’re still meeting them even as they rush headlong into a climactic…

Netflix’s “Iron Fist”: a Symptom of Fatigue

A Penny for My Thoughts

promo313885780

Super heroes have been dominating the movie industry for the last couple of years now and it has not spared the world of television. From shows like Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, Arrow, The Flash, and a few others, there has been an increase in these comic book series that feature a hero from either DC or Marvel. However, network television is not the only one clued in on this phenomenon. Netflix also features its own Marvel shows, such as Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage. The latest entry on Netflix being Iron Fist, which continues to develop the Defenders universe that has already been established by the other three shows.

Despite the success of all the prior super hero shows, however, Iron Fist stands out as the one with the lowest ratings among critics. This got me curious since I am not always…

When Freed From Its Past, Beauty and the Beast Has Its Own Brand of Magic

When Things Go Pop!

There is no real reason why a 2017 live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast should exist.

The 1991 animated film is considered a masterpiece by many, the first of its kind to receive a Best Picture Oscar nomination. The characters are iconic, the songs legendary, the artwork exquisite. Even those who find the plot troubling and outdated would be hard-pressed to find that landmark ballroom scene to be anything less than spell-binding. In other words, why watch a remake when you can just watch the cartoon? Disney, equal parts studio and relentless marketing behemoth, has banked on moviegoers ignoring the cynicism to get swept in the nostalgia of their tale as old as time.

Beauty and the Beast tells the story of Belle, a young woman living in a small town in 18th century France who longs for more than her provincial life. That life is upended when her father is…

What Happens On Skull Island Stays On Skull Island

robert is talking shut up

kong-skull-island-trailer

Reader, I come to you with a broken heart. Have you ever invested so much into something that it consumed you? Have you ever felt a passion so strong that you genuinely believed that the object your affection was something that could define the rest of your life?

Do you know what it’s like to have that, and then lose it? Watch it slip through your fingers and make you ask yourself “Dear god, what did I do wrong?” Well, I do. I know that feeling all too well. And I’m here to share my story with you.

Kong: Skull Island is … a little mediocre.

Yeah, that’s what I get for being on the hype train. I was hoping that Legendary Pictures was finally going to be doing something interesting with this IP, especially since the Good-to-Bad Kong Movie Ratio, or GTBKMR, is so staggering even by giant monster movie…

“Get Out” Shows How Scary Racism Really Is

1

If you haven’t seen the new film, Get Out, I’m certain you’ve heard about it by now.  This out-of-the-box thriller surely left audiences with lots to discuss.  Before I continue, I will give a much needed spoiler alert, so if you have not seen the movie…GET OUT (pun intended)!

Alright, let’s get to it.  It’s taken me a couple of weeks to gather my thoughts because there was A LOT to process.  There were moments when I laughed so hard, scenes when I jumped because of the suspense, and also moments when my jaw was on the floor.  Get Out‘s director, Jordan Peele, pushed the envelope and as crazy as it seems, his depiction of race relations in this country was strikingly real.

The movie was a great depiction of how blacks are often perceived by other races…specifically, the white race.  I didn’t walk away thinking that white people were the devil or that blacks shouldn’t date whites, but I did walk away thinking that Get Out was one of the first films I’ve seen that correctly shed light on what blacks sometimes experience.  Yes, the movie was an extreme depiction because I have faith that society would never get to the point where white people would literally hypnotize black people into a modern-day form of slavery.  However, the film does address the actual existence of racism and the admittance of historical slavery, through very deliberate references and strong symbolism.

Logan: What Every Superhero Movie Could Be

3

mnmohawk

IF YOU DO NOT WISH TO HAVE THIS MOVIE SPOILED FOR YOU, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO COME BACK TO THIS ARTICLE ONCE YOU’VE SEEN THE MOVIE

Before we begin, let me admit to four different things:

  1. I enjoy superhero movies
  2. I did not read comic books growing up
  3. I am not a film critic
  4. I did not read or watch any reviews before writing this piece

Knowing that this is my lens should help explain my reaction to this and other superhero movies. Also, this will be more of a broad overview; for actual story points, go see the movie.

In recent weeks, I have tried going into movies as green as possible; that is, trying to go in without knowing much about the movie or having seen any trailers. This decision came after seeing the first two trailers for Logan, and I must say that the first, with the…

How to say I Love you in Sign Language with a Review of Arrival starring Amy Adams & Jeremy Renner

WAYS TO SAY “I LOVE YOU”

SIMPLE LESSONS IN SIGN LANGUAGE

Jason's Movie Blog

WHAT IS YOUR PURPOSE ON EARTH?

Throughout the years, many have wonder of what our “first contact” with extraterrestrial life (alien) will be like. Will they be friendly? Will they be hostile? How will they look like? How will the general public regard these celestial beings? Will they understand our language and accept our humanity? Such questions have always been asked amongst the masses from the average “Joe Everyman” to prolithic scientists to powerful world leaders. While Earth has yet to have alien visitors arrive to our planet, Hollywood (over the years) has offered plenty of cinematic sci-fi representation of such an event with feature films, including film adaptations H.G. Well’s War of the Worlds (there’s being several movie adaptations of this), Close Encounters of the Third Kind, District 9, The Day the Earth Stood Still (both the original and remake), and Independence Day just to name a few…

Woooowww, what just happened there? I feel strange. I saw the movie and what did I think?

Doctor Strange Movie Review

Ok lets start with the good. The special effects were spectacular – I am just another one who feels it was Kaleidoscope-y/Inception-y but really, they looked great. But was there anything else?

Cumberbatch as Dr. Strange was good, but not as great as Downey as Tony Stark like most people are comparing. I mean Stark was so much more defined. I didn’t even see why people are saying there are comparisons – there were like 2 scenes where Strange is shown to be an egotist and a brazenly rude genius. I didn’t really care he lost his hands but I did care when Stark was being held hostage because they developed the character there you see. With Strange, they just fast forwarded without showing anything.

I didn’t really care for the whole mysticism and…
