Nearly every little girl is raised to think that she is somebody else’s half. As if she spends the sum total of her single years wandering around as half a person. I don’t think men are trained to think this way. They aren’t usually told that the climax of their life will be when they are joined to that person. But for a girl, it seems like real life doesn’t begin until she’s found that special someone she wants to spend her life with – a life during which she will happily pass the years standing in front of the kitchen sink, bending over a bassinet, and pushing a broom across the floor.

I was never so sure about that last part, especially having been raised by a mother who is not only a working professional, but who also spent a number of years as a single mom. But…
