Happy Mint Julep Day!!! – The Perfect Mint Julep

Ingredients

4 cups bourbon

2 bunches fresh spearmint

1 cup distilled water

1 cup granulated sugar

Powdered sugar

Directions

To prepare mint extract, remove about 40 small mint leaves. Wash and place in a small bowl. Cover with 3 ounces bourbon. Allow the leaves to soak for 15 minutes. Then gather the leaves in paper toweling. Thoroughly wring the mint over the bowl of whisky. Dip the bundle again and repeat the process several times.

To prepare simple syrup, mix 1 cup of granulated sugar and 1 cup of distilled water in a small saucepan. Heat to dissolve sugar. Stir constantly so the sugar does not burn. Set aside to cool.

To prepare mint julep mixture, pour 3 1/2 cups of bourbon into a large glass bowl or glass pitcher. Add 1 cup of the simple syrup to the bourbon.

Now begin adding the mint extract 1 tablespoon at a time to the julep mixture. Each batch of mint extract is different, so you must taste and smell after each tablespoon is added. You are looking for a soft mint aroma and taste-generally about 3 tablespoons. When you think it’s right, pour the whole mixture back into the empty liter bottle and refrigerate it for at least 24 hours to “marry” the flavors.

To serve the julep, fill each glass (preferably a silver mint julep cup) 1/2 full with shaved ice. Insert a spring of mint and then pack in more ice to about 1-inch over the top of the cup. Then, insert a straw that has been cut to 1-inch above the top of the cup so the nose is forced close to the mint when sipping the julep.

When frost forms on the cup, pour the refrigerated julep mixture over the ice and add a sprinkle of powdered sugar to the top of the ice. Serve immediately.

Easy Beef Brisket Recipe

Prep time: 10 minutesCook time: 3 hoursYield: Serves 8

Ingredients

3 to 4 lbs of a brisket cut of beef3/4 cup barbeque sauce1/4 cup soy sauce1 cup of water

Method

1 Preheat oven to 300ºF.

2 In a bowl, mix together the barbeque sauce, soy sauce, and water.

3a Place the brisket roast on a large piece of aluminum foil. Spread the BBQ sauce mixture generously over meat. Wrap the brisket in aluminum foil and place it in a roasting pan. Bake for 1 hour for every 1 pound of meat.

3b Place the barbecue sauce and brisket in an oven roasting bag. Sprinkle a teaspoon of flour into the bag. Poke a couple small holes in the bag. Place the bag in a roasting pan. You may find that the cooking time is faster with this method, or you can reduce the oven temperature to 275°F.

4 Remove from oven and let rest in the foil for 30 minutes before serving. The easiest way to serve the roast is to first cut it in half along the grain of the meat (poke the meat with the tip of a knife or tines of a fork to see which way the grain or lines of the muscles are going if you can’t see it from the surface). Then make 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch thick cuts across the grain to serve. (Cutting the meat across the grain will make it much easier to eat, as the cuts break up the muscle tissue.)

George Clooney thinks everyone should accept aging and work with what they’ve got. During an interview with BBC’s Radio 4, the Tomorrowland actor, 54, revealed he’s against men getting plastic surgery because it only makes them look older.
“Clearly, I haven’t. For me, it isn’t an issue or an option,” the hunk said when asked about dying his hair or contemplating going under the knife. “I don’t think it would make much sense, quite honestly…I’ve seen it happen and…particularly on men, I don’t think it really works well. I actually think it makes you look older.” 

While Clooney jokes that you only have two options in life — “get older or die.”

“I’m a big believer in the idea that you can’t try to look younger,” he added. “You just have to try to look the best you can at the age you are and not worry about it.”

“I will say that there’s nothing fun—and I know for actresses it’s infinitely worse because of public perception based on nothing except studios not hiring them and those sorts of things—but I think for all of us, you have to come to terms with getting older and not trying to fight it,” he concluded.

Scientists are testing whether MDMA, the active ingredient in Ecstasy, may help treat social anxiety in adults with autism.

Los Angeles researchers want to see if MDMA, a “heart-opening” drug, reduces the fear of interacting with people in the first study to look at MDMA and autistic people, co-investigator Alicia Danforth said.

MDMA has been shown to boost confidence, heighten bonding and increase understanding of social cues, all qualities that could ease social anxiety, researchers said.

Scientists are not trying to “cure” autism but instead find data about MDMA’s effect on social anxiety, she said.

The study is imperative because few treatment options exist for the condition in adults with autism, who are at a higher risk of having it, said the researchers from the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

The MDMA used in the study is safer than Ecstasy and Molly because it is pure, Danforth said. The street drugs are usually contaminated, with only 20% of Ecstasy pills even containing MDMA in some samples, and can be harmful, she said.

Exposure to noise from traffic, trains and planes may be linked to a burgeoning belly, Swedish researchers report.

The increased risk of a larger waist rose with the number of sources of noise someone was exposed to at the same time — from 25 percent for those exposed to only one source to nearly double for those exposed to all three sources, the scientists added.

“Long-term exposure to traffic noise may affect our metabolism and lead to abdominal obesity,” said lead researcher Charlotta Eriksson, from the Institute Environmental Medicine at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm.

“Traffic noise should be recognized as an important environmental health hazard that needs to be taken into consideration in urban planning,” she said.

Eriksson cautioned that this is an observational study, so no definitive conclusions can be drawn about cause and effect between traffic noise and abdominal obesity.

Traffic noise, however, may be even more harmful to health than was previously known, Eriksson said. Earlier research has shown associations between traffic noise and high blood pressure and heart attacks, she noted.
